APDES on TV program dedicated to Alcohol and Drugs
On February 12th our Executive Director, José Queiroz, participated in the RTP2 program called Sociedade Civil (Civil Society), dedicated to the Alcohol and Drugs issue.
The program had João Goulão, Director-General of SICAD (General Directorate for Intervention on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies); Miguel Vasconcelos, Coordinator of the Centro das Taipas; and João Marques (Psychiatrist and President of the Portuguese Society of Alcohol Dependence).
José Queiroz, in addition to presenting an overview of what APDES does, reinforced four essential aspects of the work that we carry out:
- the importance of looking at the drug user as a political being, with an agency and not just as a user of national health services;
- the use of naloxone, that is difficult to access in Portugal, despite scientific evidence that shows that this is a life-saving drug in the event of an overdose;
- combination therapy, which earned APDES recognition by the World Health Organization;
- the integration of peers in our outreach teams, which enables bringing the technical team closer to the beneficiaries, expanding the horizons of either party.
