On May 16, SIC broadcasted a report about the impact that the so-called Supervised Consumption Rooms have on people who use drugs. The report highlighted part of the work carried out at the Supervised Consumption Room in Porto, led by the APDES consortium. Lisbon and Porto are the cities in Portugal that host these risk reduction and harm minimization programs.
These facilities are adapted and suitable spaces for people who use psychoactive substances, supervised by qualified professionals. One of the main goals is to reduce health risks associated with consumption, while also helping to eliminate public and unprotected drug use. Multidisciplinary teams work in these spaces, including doctors, social workers, psychologists, nurses, and peer educators—a crucial role for engaging and intervening with drug users.
