GIRUGaia is an interdisciplinary outreach team that works with drug users in Vila Nova de Gaia. Guided by principles related to harm reduction, it promotes the use of aseptic material and the adoption of lower risk use practices. It also provides services that promote citizenship, health and social inclusion.
Since 2007, GIRUGaia has been delivering a Combined Therapy Program combining a low-threshold opioid substitution with the administering of antiretroviral and tuberculostatic drugs.
In 2012, GIRUGaia’s program was recognised as an example of “Good Practice”, in the ambit of opioid substitution therapies.
