Since 2008, APDES has been developing a Health Prevention/Promotion Project in the Regional Prison Facilities of Guarda, by working alongside the prisoners to prevent inadequate drug use and the problems associated with it. Themes like sexual health, prevention of infectious diseases (namely HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis), piercings and tattoos, healthy diet and physical exercise and suicide prevention are discussed with the prisoners (individually or in groups), by resorting to peer education. The team developed a specific methodology of Peer Education for the Promotion of Health, adequate to the prison context, which allows the team to reach a larger number of individuals while promoting personal and social competences, such as citizenship and active participation in public places.

The prisoners benefited from the intervention process carried out, through training programs, individual psychosocial monitoring, peer education, information and awareness-raising sessions and ludic/cultural activities. This project is co-funded by IDT/SICAD.

This project is supported by RECI, part of FCT’s network of E&D research units.
